Ending Procastination

Now after an excellent article from Adam Khoo, it is yet another great article from my favourite mentor Jim Rohn.

Reproduced with permission from Jim Rohn's Weekly E-zine.

****************************

Ending Procrastination by Jim Rohn

Perseverance is about as important to achievement as gasoline is to driving a car. Sure, there will be times when you feel like you're spinning your wheels, but you'll always get out of the rut with genuine perseverance. Without it, you won't even be able to start your engine.

The opposite of perseverance is procrastination. Perseverance means you never quit. Procrastination usually means you never get started, although the inability to finish something is also a form of procrastination.

Ask people why they procrastinate and you'll often hear something like this: "I'm a perfectionist. Everything has to be just right before I can get down to work. No distractions, not too much noise, no telephone calls interrupting me, and of course I have to be feeling well physically, too. I can't work when I have a headache." The other end of procrastination - being unable to finish - also has a perfectionist explanation: "I'm just never satisfied. I'm my own harshest critic. If all the it's aren't dotted and all the t's aren't crossed, I just can't consider that I'm done. That's just the way I am, and I'll probably never change."

Do you see what's going on here? A fault is being turned into a virtue. The perfectionist is saying that his standards are just too high for this world. This fault-into-virtue syndrome is a common defense when people are called upon to discuss their weaknesses, but in the end it's just a very pious kind of excuse making. It certainly doesn't have anything to do with what's really behind procrastination.

Remember, the basis of procrastination could be fear of failure. That's what perfectionism really is, once you take a hard look at it. What's the difference whether you're afraid of being less than perfect or afraid of anything else? You're still paralyzed by fear. What's the difference whether you never start or never finish? You're still stuck. You're still going nowhere. You're still overwhelmed by whatever task is before you. You’re still allowing yourself to be dominated by a negative vision of the future in which you see yourself being criticized, laughed at, punished, or ridden out of town on a rail. Of course, this negative vision of the future is really a mechanism that allows you to do nothing. It's a very convenient mental tool.

I'm going to tell you how to overcome procrastination. I'm going to show you how to turn procrastination into perseverance, and if you do what I suggest, the process will be virtually painless. It involves using two very powerful principles that foster productivity and perseverance instead of passivity and procrastination.

The first principle is: Break it Down.

No matter what you're trying to accomplish, whether it's writing a book, climbing a mountain, or painting a house the key to achievement is your ability to break down the task into manageable pieces and knock them off one at one time. Focus on accomplishing what's right in front of you at this moment. Ignore what's off in the distance someplace. Substitute real-time positive thinking for negative future visualization. That's the first all- important technique for bringing an end to procrastination.

Suppose I were to ask you if you could write a four hundred-page novel. If you're like most people, that would sound like an impossible task. But suppose I ask you a different question. Suppose I ask if you can write a page and a quarter a day for one year. Do you think you could do it? Now the task is starting to seem more manageable. We're breaking down the four-hundred-page book into bite-size pieces. Even so, I suspect many people would still find the prospect intimidating. Do you know why? Writing a page and a quarter may not seem so bad, but you're being asked to look ahead one whole year. When people start to do look that far ahead, many of them automatically go into a negative mode. So let me formulate the idea of writing a book in yet another way. Let me break it down even more.

Suppose I was to ask you: can you fill up a page and a quarter with words-not for a year, not for a month, not even for a week, but just today? Don't look any further ahead than that. I believe most people would confidently declare that they could accomplish that. Of course, these would be the same people who feel totally incapable of writing a whole book.

If I said the same thing to those people tomorrow - if I told them, I don't want you to look back, and I don't want you to look ahead, I just want you to fill up a page and a quarter this very day - do you think they could do it?

One day at a time. We've all heard that phrase. That's what we're doing here. We're breaking down the time required for a major task into one-day segments, and we're breaking down the work involved in writing a four hundred-page book into page-and-a-quarter increments.

Keep this up for one year, and you'll write the book. Discipline yourself to look neither forward nor backward, and you can accomplish things you never thought you could possibly do. And it all begins with those three words: break it down.

My second technique for defeating procrastination is also only three words long. The three words are: Write it Down. We know how important writing is to goal setting. The writing you'll do for beating procrastination is very similar. Instead of focusing on the future, however, you're now going to be writing about the present just as you experience it every day. Instead of describing the things you want to do or the places you want to go, you're going to describe what you actually do with your time, and you're going to keep a written record of the places you actually go.

In other words, you're going to keep a diary of your activities. And you're going to be amazed by the distractions, detours, and downright wastes of time you engage in during the course of a day. All of these get in the way of achieving your goals. For many people, it's almost like they planned it that way, and maybe at some unconscious level they did. The great thing about keeping a time diary is that it brings all this out in the open. It forces you to see what you're actually doing... and what you're not doing.

The time diary doesn't have to be anything elaborate. Just buy a little spiral notebook that you can easily carry in your pocket. When you go to lunch, when you drive across town, when you go to the dry cleaners, when you spend some time shooting the breeze at the copying machine, make a quick note of the time you began the activity and the time it ends. Try to make this notation as soon as possible; if it's inconvenient to do it immediately, you can do it later. But you should make an entry in your time diary at least once every thirty minutes, and you should keep this up for at least a week.

Break it down. Write it down. These two techniques are very straightforward. But don't let that fool you: these are powerful and effective productivity techniques that allow you put an end to procrastination and help you get started to achieving your goals.

To Your Success,
Jim Rohn

For Things To Change, You Must Change First!

Today I like to excerpt an article from Adam Khoo, a great motivator and personal development coach born and breed in Singapore! If you have not read his book on "The Secret of Self-Made Millionaires", then I suggest you go to his Website http://www.adam-khoo.com/ to take a look. His book is easy to read, enlightening and easy to follow! He is a self made millionaire at the age of 26, do I need to say more?

I think with the above shameless promotion for Adam, he will not mind me sharing one of his articles here at my blog for my readers right? hahaa..

So here's the article..

For Things To Change You Must Change First...
-----

People always say, "What if it is really not my fault? What if the
situation is totally out of my hands?"

In actual fact we always play a role in creating whatever is
happening to us, whether consciously or subconsciously.

We create our experiences either through our thoughts or our
actions. You can say something emphatically, but if you are
thinking something else, people can pick up the vibes, or it will
show up in your body language.

People who are in control of their lives believe that they create
their world. If everything is going great, then they created it,
not anybody else. If things are not going well, then they created
it as well.

Some people tell me that they never get a good break. They never
get lucky enough to land a great opportunity. They are never at the
right place at the right time. I believe you create your own luck.
Or I prefer the word opportunity or break.

If you never find any good opportunities, it could be because of
your limiting beliefs and thoughts. If you believe that there are
no opportunities around, your mind will tend to delete all the
great opportunities, even if they are there right before you.

Once there was a woman who had been looking for the right partner
for the last 20 years. She was in her late 30s and getting
concerned she would never find her ideal guy.

When asked what she was looking for, she started describing this
perfect man who had to be rich, handsome, humorous, sensitive and
charming.

When asked bluntly, 'Would this man with all these traits want to
marry you?' She had no answer.

If she wanted to attract the perfect man, she must first be that
perfect woman to attract him!

One single most important message in this article is, for things to
change, we must first change ourselves. When we take responsibility
for what we get and change ourselves, everything and everybody else
will change with us!

So,

If you want to attract the best staff, be the best boss
If you want to have the best kids, be the best parent
If you want the perfect wife, then be that perfect husband
If you want the highest income, add the greatest value
If you want to attract the best customers, become the best company

Focus on yourself and success will come.

To Your Success,

Adam Khoo

Do You Really Need A Car?

2 and a half year ago, as i was doing sales, I bought myself a Chevolet Aveo so that it helps me to move around meeting clients. About 1 year ago i quitted my sales job and went back to a desk bound job.

I continue to drive my car, although my current job does not require it. But as days go by, I started to feel the strain of the financial burden of owning a car. With the monthly installment, road tax, insurance, parking fees, petrol and the ERP system, i have to fork out easily $1300-$1400 every month simply driving to and from my office!!

The only reason I continue to drive my car is because of the pride of owning one. My mum always tell her friends I got a car and I can give them a lift, which I gladly do as it makes me and my mum feels proud. Furthermore, having a car means you stand a better chance with girls comparing to guys without one. In short, owning a car give you a higher social status.

2 months ago, I finally decided that it is not making financial sense to continue paying $1400 just for my ego. As i need to top up another $13000 if i am to sell my car, I opt for the next best alternative, I rented out my car.

Some how I do not feel smaller after renting out my car, as I have learnt to accept and be true to oneself. So as friends and colleagues ask me why do I need to rent out my car, I just tell them my current pay cannot afford such luxury.

2 months down the road, I realised something quite... disturbing. At least 5 friends have asked me for the contact of the car rental company as they all wanted to rent out their car. It seems that I am not the only person feeling the financial strain of it.

When people purchases a car, they usually only take the installment amount and petrol into consideration, and simply neglected all the other hidden costs, which can added up to a huge burden. But some how in Singapore, buying car becomes the top priority for young working class as it is a symbol of status. Althought there are 5 friends asking me for car rental company contact, there are also a few friends who wanted to buy a new car, simply because they wanted to become car owner status.

Therefore, before you consider buying a car, make sure you do a proper calculation, including Road Tax, Insurance, Season Parking, Petrol, Monthly Installment and other micelleneous charges, which for a small 1.4 litre car will be easily around $1400. If this amount is more than 30% of your monthly take home pay, then you better reconsider carefully whether it is a need to have such luxury, as this sum of money with proper investment can becomes at least a million in 20 to 30 years time.

Cheers!

How Rich Are You?

If there is a person who earns $10,000 a month, drives a sport car and lives in a condo and have $30,000 in his bank, and a person who earns $3000 a month, lives in a 3 room flat and travel by public transport and only have $10,000 in his bank, who do you think is richer?

Very naturally people will say the person who earns $10,000 is richer! Is it really the case?

When we measure a person's wealth, we have to look at both the income and expenses.

For example, let's say the person who earns $10,000 (Let's call him A) spends most of his salary on his condo and sport car and luxurious lifestyle. Every month he needs to spend $7,000 just on the condo and sport car, and another $2,000 on miscellaneous bills. His only source of income is from his paycheck.

For B, the person who earns $3000, every month he only needs around $800 to pay for his flat and another $400 for traveling and miscellaneous bills, and his paycheck is his only source of income too.

When A lost his job, his only liquid asset is his $30,000 saving. Every month he needs $9,000 to pay for housing and car and bills, which means with the $30,000, he can only survive for 3.3 month. Therefore he is only 3.3 month rich.

When B lost his job, he only got $10,000 saving. His monthly expenses is $1200. Therefore with $10,000 he can survive 8.3 month.

In this case, B is richer than A by 5 months!

Do a calculation and see how many months can you survive if you quit your job tomorrow!! That is how rich you actually are!!

Cheers!

It Is Not Your Rich Dad Poor Dad's Fault!

It is not your rich dad poor dad fault!! Then who's fault is it?

I just had a conversation with my brother on a new young billionaire in Singapore. My brother said, he can becomes a billionaire because he got a rich dad. This sentence sounds so familiar.. I think I heard my brother-in-law said something similar before, and my friends and.. I think I have said it myself 6 years ago!!

So I told my brother, even if this guy got a poor dad, he will becomes a billionaire, perhaps it will take him another extra 5-10 years to earn the capital that his rich dad gave him, but he will becomes a billionaire because he got the millionaire mindset (billionaire mindset in this case).

If he only knows how to spend money, he will never becomes a billionaire because he will only waste away the money his rich dad gave him. But with the billionaire mindset, his rich dad's money only accelerate his climbs to billionaire status.

My brother does not accept this reasoning. Sad to say, most friends including my brother-in-law prefer to credit other people's achievement to rich dad or simply pure lucky! And blame others for their own failures.

If you are one of them, please STOP!! Who you are today is because of your thoughts and your actions. If you are successful, you have yourself to congratulate. If you are not successful, you have only yourself to blame!!!

STOP POINTING YOUR FINGERS!!!

Look into the mirror and reflect! Success leaves clues, so does Failure!!

It is not your rich dad poor dad's fault!

Facing The Giants

Today I like to share another very inspiring video. I first saw this video on Vic Johnson's Blog. Many things run through my mind while watching it.

While Vic touch on the Power of Persistent, where you keep going, you can accomplished incredible things, I saw something else.

I saw the coach who keep encouraging, pushing and help the player to unleash his full potential. Without the coach, this player will never done what he has done!!

We all need a mentor, someone who can see our potential and willing to walk the field, shouting and pushing and encouraging us to unleash our full potential.

Have you found your mentor yet?

One Key Trait of Successful People

PERSISTENT!

This is the key trait found on every single Successful Person without fail. We have electricity today because Newton had experimented 1000 times before he was successful. If he gave up on the 999th times, we might still be living using candles, and nobody will know who is Issac Newton.

You can be very talented and work very hard. But if you never persist until the end, getting through all the obstacles, failures and setbacks.. you are still not successful.

Once you have embark on a journey, never never stop halfway through... because the next corner might be your destination. But if you stop, you will never find out..

So whatever you are doing, keep going! Keep going until you reach your set targets. Keep going until you achieve your goals. Keep going until your are there!

KEEP GOING!!

You Need More Time to read??

"If only I have more time!!" Does this sound familiar? Not enough time used to be one of my biggest problem.

Today I would like to touch on 2 simple methods that I use that earns me quite a few hours every week.

Emails and Articles

If you subscribe to many newsletters, ezines and blogs, you would have faced this problem of finishing all of them. There are simply too many emails and articles to read, and no matter how you tried, every email you cleared, 2 more come in!

What I did is to create many sub-folders and name them according to the Topics or authors. Whatever emails that come in, I will briefly browse through them and then keep them in the relevant folders if there are no important topics that captured my attention. (On those days that I have very tight schedule, I will simply transfer all those non-urgent emails into the folders without reading)

Resist the urge to read every single words on every emails. You Do Not Need To!!

And whenever I need information on Health, I just need to search my Health folder and all the relevant articles will be there for me.

I will make sure my inbox is empty. Those emails left in my inbox are emails that required my attention. Once I have settled the issues, these emails will be transfered to relevant folders.

SPEED READING

Currently I am learning Speed Reading, a skill that will double or even triple the amount of times I can free up once you master it.

The book I read is from Tony Buzan, and the idea is simple. If you can double your reading speed, you can half the time you need to read for each articles. If you spend 2 hours on average a day reading, with speed reading you can finish in 1 hour.

That is extra 7 hours a week, or extra 3 and a half 8 hours day per month!

Cheers!
